Operation NightHawk

Operation NightHawk

Operation NightHawk is an overnight bush hike for Scouts on the Darling Downs, run by Darling Downs Region since 1982. Around 1,200 Scouts from Queensland and Northern NSW take part each year, making it one of the largest Scouting activities in Queensland. Bardon’s Scouts regularly take part, and in 2026 they placed third (read the news).

Event Details

When: Usually the second full weekend in August Duration: Overnight, Friday evening to Saturday Where: A different Darling Downs venue each year (recently Crows Nest Showgrounds and Clifton Airfield) Who: Scouts (not Joeys, Cubs or Venturers)

The Challenge

Patrols hike through the bush after dark, navigating between activity bases. At each base they’re tested on skills such as mapping, first aid, communication, construction and survival, on leadership and teamwork, and on Scouting general knowledge. Each patrol is scored across the bases, so it’s both a learning experience and a competition. Adult leaders supervise throughout and medical support is on site.

What to Bring

Your Scout Leader will send the full gear list closer to the event, along with the permission and medical forms. It usually includes:

  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Backpack, water bottle and high-energy snacks for the hike
  • Two sets of clothes (one to hike in, one dry set for after), warm layers and a rain jacket, as August nights can be cold
  • Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots or runners, and a hat
  • Sleeping bag and mat, plate and cup
  • Personal first aid items and medications
  • Scout uniform, as the leaders specify

History

NightHawk was founded in 1982 by Don Masters (Kanga) and Mike Cole (Hawk) of Toowoomba’s Garraboo District and has grown into Queensland’s second-largest Scouting activity. In 2019 it was recognised in the Outdoors Queensland Awards. Darling Downs Region runs it with support from the Australian Defence Force, Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Police, Toowoomba Regional Council, local property owners and Rover Scouts.
