About ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day, observed on 25 April each year, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It commemorates the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I at Gallipoli in 1915.

The day has since grown to honour all Australians who have served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and the spirit of ANZAC (courage, mateship and sacrifice) continues to have meaning and relevance for all Australians.

The Ithaca War Memorial

The Ithaca War Memorial in Paddington is a significant local landmark in the Bardon/Paddington area. The memorial and annual service provide an opportunity for our local community to gather and remember the service and sacrifice of those from our area who served in times of war.

The service is organised by the Ashgrove-Bardon RSL Sub Branch and brings together veterans, current service personnel, emergency services, community groups, schools, and Scout groups from across the local area.

What to Expect

The March Scouts assemble with their unit and march as a group to the War Memorial. The march is a solemn procession showing respect and remembrance.

The Service The commemorative service includes:

  • The Ode of Remembrance (“They shall grow not old…”)
  • The Last Post
  • One minute’s silence
  • The Rouse
  • Laying of wreaths
  • Addresses from community and military representatives
  • National Anthem

After the Service Many families stay to view the wreaths and reflect on the significance of the day. Some attend gunfire breakfast or other community gatherings.
